U.S. ramps up evacuations from Kabul

President Biden said he is considering keeping troops in Afghanistan past the August 31 deadline in order to complete evacuations, and that his “first priority” is getting thousands of stranded U.S. citizens out. CBS News

The Pentagon activated a rarely used program to compel domestic commercial airlines to assist with the evacuation effort. Eighteen of their planes will help ferry people from transit points like Qatar on to other destinations. The Washington Post

Meanwhile, in northern Afghanistan, the Taliban fought deadly battles against resistance forces that are hoping to pressure the militant group into sharing power as it forms a government. The Wall Street Journal

At least 22 people died after severe flooding swept through Humphreys County, Tennessee, and about 20 remain missing. “It is a devastating picture of loss and heartache,” said Governor Bill Lee.

Henri made landfall in Rhode Island on Sunday, bringing fierce winds and heavy downpours to the Northeast and causing more than 100,000 households to lose power. The storm is expected to continue dumping rain across the region today.
